There was a recent study in “the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” January 2024 that found that taking a multivitamin can benefit both global memory (our overall cognition) along with episodic memory ( our recollection of past events and experiences)  Statistically those with mild cognitive impairment are 3 to 5 times more likely to develop a form of Dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease than those without.

So can taking a MVI intercept this process and if so; what is in a MVI that benefits our brain health?

  • MVI’s with B6 and B12  help to produce neurotransmitters such as Dopamine and Serotonin.  These helps us to feel good and give us a sense of well being which enhances brain function  Serotonin is essential in regulating our sleep cycles.  Experiencing deep restful sleep enhances the brain to detoxify and store memories.
  • Vitamins C and E along with selenium and zinc are anti-oxidants that reduce inflammation in the brain.  These are some of our essential micronutrients that we need to break down macronutrients in our food so both out body and brain gets the essential nutrients.  Without essential nutrients one can experience brain fog and poor memory recall over time
  • Minerals such as magnesium, zinc and copper are important in maintaining the brains electrical charge. This enhances messaging throughout the brain.

The biggest takeaway from this article is that taking a Multivitamin can benefit some as a tool in the prevention of cognitive decline.  All of us are unique individuals and taking a Multivitamin should be discussed with your personal health care practitioner.
